The Architecture Program enjoys strong support within the interdisciplinary Faculty of Environmental Design and the University of Calgary, and has been widely recognized for the recent achievements of faculty, students and alumni. All students must complete one capstone option. The Association was given authority to administer its own Act under provincial legislation which came into effect on July 31, 1912, was updated in 1996, and is known as An Act respecting The Saskatchewan Association of Architects (The Architects Act). In this subject we will be thinking hard about identity and representation (including self-representation), power and ethics, the complexities of memory, as well as possibilities afforded by different forms of life writing, which encompass personal essays, memoirs, biographies, diaries, letters, oral histories, family histories, blogs etc. This subject addresses ethical issues and legal constraints related to working in the arts and culture sector, including publishing for print and digital media. Through seminars and hands-on workshops, students are introduced to the business and management aspects of book publishing that underpin list-building, and to the processes involved in selecting and commissioning titles, researching potential markets, building a distinctive list, choosing formats (print and digital), and providing effective commentary on work in progress. To be eligible to enrol in the minor thesis, all students must submit a 300 word thesis proposal on a relevant topic for approval by the course coordinator at least 2 weeks prior to the semester of enrolment in the thesis. This subject is compulsory for students planning to take Writing Radical Performance in the 3rd year of their studies. This subject gives students hands-on experience of publishing through the Publishing program’s teaching press, Grattan Street Press, and teaches reflective learning techniques to consolidate the development of project management skills. All students are required to complete the Capstone Requirement for the program (at least 50 points). Students will complete a minimum of 50 points of elective subjects and a maximum of 87.5 points of elective subjects throughout the course. This subject will introduce students to the principles and practices associated with the development and structural editing of a range of texts from four specialised genres: fiction, trade non-fiction, children’s books, genre fiction and educational publishing. As one of the five departments within the Faculty of Architecture, the Department of Architecture offers a program of studies directed towards a professional Master of Architecture degree. Conversely, architectural studies provide an excellent foundation for careers in various design-related fields. Through a rigorous examination of the work of key artists and writing from the 1980s onwards, students will devise concepts for games, performance and enhance their scriptwriting practice. Our focus is not solely on print, but on the magazine as a form that continues to evolve in response to social and technological change. Preparation is recommended in the visual arts, such as drawing, sculpture, graphics, photography, film, or new media, as well as computing and advanced writing skills. In this subject students will engage with creative and intellectual concepts that deal with an understanding of place (and places) and its relationship to individuals, communities and cultural formations. Carleton emphasizes architecture as a practical art that brings together the physical realities of building within the cultural conditions of our complex society. Themes and texts that may be included in subject reading material will be essays and interviews that address the production and craft of writing and the ways in which environmental issues are fictionalised. The program is a two-year, six-semester, studio-based course of study designed for students with a strong technical background in architecture. Students will read graphic fiction and non-fiction with a focus on 20th century writers such as Robert Crumb, Art Spiegelman, Alison Bechdel, Chris Ware, Marjane Satrapi, Charles Burns, Bruce Mutard and Shaun Tan.
